I love tea, trad, and tweed as well as bell, book, and candle.

I’m fascinated by Dark Academia. (If The Secret History means nothing to you, you can stop reading now).

I love traditional clothes, especially men’s “Ivy Style” fashion – tweed jackets, oxford cloth shirts, repp ties, etc.

I am a witch. (And none of this placid goody-goody kitchen witch wicca crap. I believe in magic, and magic comes from pain. Somebody is going to get hurt, every time, and if I can help it, it ain’t gonna be me.)

I’m an INTJ female, which, btw, is the least common of all the MBTI by far. We exisit in less than half of one percent of the general population. And we’re awesome.

I suffer for tremendous wanderlust, for India, Morocco, and Cuba in particular.

I’m absolutely bisexual. I get mad crushes on ginger girls and would have thrown myself at the likes of Lord Byron, Arthur Rimbaud, Gertrude Bell, Joan of Arc, Abigail Williams, Patti Smith, the Marquis de Sade, and more fictional characters than you can shake a stick at.

My favourite author is Thomas Hardy, my favourite poet is T. S. Eliot, and I reread Wuthering Heights every January.

My favourite musicians are: Nick Drake, Van Morrison, Lloyd Cole, Miles Davis, and Tim Hecker. I also listen to a lot of world music, particularly modern fuzz-tone or reverb heavy psychedelia from India, Southeast Asia or Northern Africa.

I have a graduate degrees in Philosophy (concentration: Wittgenstein), Education (concentration: Ethics) and History (concentration: Eton College).

I am a schizophrenic, and have been twice institutionalised in mental hospitals. I am currently stabilized. I hear voices. I take a lot of medication to mitigate this. I’m not always sure I want to.

I suffer from fibromyalgia, and am in constant pain. I was diagnosed three years ago. I take a lot of medications for this as well.

I have a very high I.Q. and very low self esteem.

Anyway, I don’t expect an answer, I’m sure this has been said elsewhere already and you’re bored to death of hearing about TSH, but I needed somewhere to rant. Thanks!

Phew. Alright then, hope that helped. Just wanted to clarify a few things : I recommend reading it until exhaustion if you loved it and miss its ambiance, as said ambiance usually wears off once you pick up the crooked and wrong notes. And of course, style, being the kernel of the author’s vision and aesthetic voice, can’t please everyone—I perfectly understand what you dislike, though it is what I personally enjoyed about the book—the meticulousness and grandeur of the prose, the lulling of the reader into a honeyed trap through quiet scenes and beauty details. The plot was not the only thing driving the story, if you will. There’s an old school delight in the cluttering, the detailing, the atmosphere, which comes straight from slower 19th century novels. However, on the point of “telling” instead of showing, and your example in particular, I do read these kind of retro-active anecdotes as cracks into the perfect world Richard as created. We learn them too late, we see the downsides of his frequentations only when he comes to open his eyes, and as they bubble up and revise what we have enjoyed in the first part of the book, we feel the uneasiness grow—we did not see this happen. We have been lied to. It seems to me a very clever device. Tartt in The Secret History plays a game of hide and seek with perceptions, idealisation, deception, and this slow disenchantment of Richard is an inherent part of the process.
